Word count: 604
Notes: This is just another short “write this scene with your own words” kind of fic, in this case, what I believe Conrad was thinking in the beginning episode 98 (S3ep21).
There was nothing wrong with the room Yuuri rested in. The big room with its lush red velvet, a thick carpet that muffled the sound of every step, silk sheets and many gold chandeliers was very luxurious, very appropriate for a royal guest. It could have been warm and inviting, but to Conrad, there was something off about it, in the same way that the whole castle was trying to send one message - comfort, safety, beauty - but was sending off altogether different vibes.
Heaviness, loneliness. Something dark and sad.
It was more than a little odd to Conrad that Yuuri seemed to feel so at home there, and so at ease in the company of the young King Saralegui, a person none of them really knew and few of them trusted.
The only one Conrad trusted was Beryes, simply because he saw something of himself in him. Beryes would always protect his king; his loyalty was bondless, and there was honesty in that. There was no way to hide such sentiments, and Conrad appreciated knowing it. But that did not tell him anything about the king’s intentions.
When Yuuri woke up, he looked confused, as expected. When he was asked, however, if he knew where he was, he nodded and seemed to be aware of his surroundings and the implications.
Then, as soon as he was sitting up straight, he said that he had to go see ‘Sara.’ He had to see him, now.
Conrad suspected that the young boy king didn’t even know what his face looked like and what the tone of his voice was betraying.
They all protested, but Wolfram, surprisingly, just looked away as if he hadn’t heard. Conrad guessed why. Who can object to their fiancé seeing the person who saved his life?
“King Saralegui is also sleeping in his chambers”, Conrad said. “I will go ask for him in your place.”
He would have gone anyway, but he was almost glad that Yuuri had to bring it up first. Conrad had tried to put an emphasis on the words ‘in your place’, wishing - but not really believing - that Yuuri would stay content with that, and that they could leave Small Shimaron without letting the two young kings meet again…
Ever since King Saralegui came into their lives, Conrad had had a strange feeling. As if he heard birds crying ‘bad omen, bad omen’ over and over again in his mind.
“Wolfram”, he said, and his younger brother glanced insecurely at him before turning his eyes back to Yuuri. “Be sure to watch over His Majesty.”
Wolfram sniffed and put his hands on his hips, like he always did when he wanted to assert himself, show how strong and proud he was, sure of himself…
“You don’t have to tell me that”, he said.
No, Conrad thought as he walked toward the door with a strange fish ornament over the door. No, little brother, I don’t have to tell you that. But maybe I have to tell Yuuri…
Yozak had been right in what he had been saying before. There had been something different this time in the way Yuuri used his power. It had been too violent, too out of control, too… passionate, as if two hearts were bleeding instead of one.
He had had his doubts before about Yuuri’s engagement to his brother; they didn’t seem quite right for each other. But now... Well, he was determined to do everything he could to keep Yuuri safe, and that probably included making sure his heart stayed in Shin Makoku.
Conrad only feared that it was already too late.
