When Sarah’s brother got married, she didn’t understand love. But she knew that her brother’s wife Maddy was the prettiest girl she had ever seen and probably the gentlest, sweetest soul that had ever lived.

Sarah spent as much time as she could in her brother’s house, and helped out with everything. When a certain pair of eyes fell upon her or when a kind hand touched her shoulder, she felt something strange like a fluttering of something light and wild trapped within her.

She liked to just look at Maddy whenever she got a chance. She loved to be close, be helpful, be a friend.

Her brother didn’t like it.

“Can’t a man be alone in his own house? Mum, you’ve got to do something about Sarah!”

“I thought she was helpful”, the mother complained. “Sarah’s only thirteen but she works hard, harder than your wife, and god knows I’ve got enough mouths to feed here!”

“But it’s fucking creepy, having her ogling my wife like she wants to do god knows what!”

Sarah overheard the conversation. She didn’t understand the problem but she knew that she was being punished when her mum found stupid, useless things for her to do at home.

As if her mum was thinking: ‘Anything goes, as long as it keeps Sarah away from Maddy’. And soon after, she found employment for Sarah far away from home.

Sarah almost forgot. She didn’t realise until years later that Maddy had been her first love.
