She was never alone when she was a child. The older ones bossed her around until they left home, and then she had the younger ones to take care of boss around until it was her turn to leave home.
As a young woman, she was never alone. There was always a cook in the kitchen, and a housekeeper, and a butler, and other maids…
Loneliness is a privilege for the rich (or a curse for the outcasts), something to strive for when one is a girl with far too many siblings and then roommates. Bur a lady’s maid gets to share that privilege to some extent. Always available, yes, always ready to be of service, but a lady’s maid is at least entitled to her own bedroom.
Funny how things turn out. Not until she became Lady Grantham’s maid did she get to be alone at last, but then…
But then she didn’t want it. With every year that passes, the harder it is to say goodnight and leave the lady’s bedroom.
It would be different, of course, if they were alone together, if her lady took her hand at night and said: Alone at last!
But she doesn’t.
