Chapter 8: Facing your fears

It was Sunday afternoon and Adriana was outside the elevator. She knew she couldn’t go on using the stairs forever; besides, it had been weeks since she’d last gotten on the elevator and it was high time she faced her fears and got back in control. However, she couldn’t help feeling terrified at the sight of the empty elevator before her. She’d been standing there for what seemed like forever when someone approached her from behind and greeted her.

“Hi!” Jensen said with a cheerful smile.

“Hi, there!” She answered surprised to see him there.

“Still scared?”

“Is it that obvious?” She asked trying hard to hide how nervous he actually made her.

“Only to the expert eye!”

They both laughed and Adriana felt somewhat relieved.

“You know, I’ve been using the stairs and avoiding the elevator myself. So, what do you say? Why don’t we try and do this together?” Jensen suggested with a soft smile.

“Okay. Sounds good to me!”

They took a deep breath, Jensen held her hand and they waited for the elevator to come back down. The shiny metal doors opened, they took a deep breath, and stepped inside. Jensen let go of her hand to push the button for the fifth floor but then, instead of holding it again, he wrapped his left arm around her waist and rested his hand on her hip while he held her left hand with his right one, leaving no space between them.

They were scared and their bodies were shaking ―there was no denying that! And yet, all Jensen could think of was how badly he wanted to draw her even closer to him till she was caged in his arms so that he could drink from her luscious lips.

He lightly caressed her waist and hip with the tip of his fingers while his heart raced out of control, not knowing if it was purely out of fear or excitement. Truth be told, he was enjoying every second of it, and thanking God for the thin fabric of the green strapless she was wearing. He could swear it felt like a second skin which allowed him to have a hint of what lay underneath.

Jensen started feeling a tingling sensation building inside him and knew what would happen if he kept focusing on the brunette like that, so he fixed his eyes on the doors before him and wished ―real hard!― for them to open soon before he gave himself away. Luckily, the doors opened on the fifth floor and they stepped outside.

They had such sense of achievement that they hugged and shouted "We did it!" completely unaware of the fact that they were hopping like little children. They were absolutely thrilled about the whole thing, nothing more exciting than conquering your own fears!

They’d stopped hopping after a few seconds but their arms were still wrapped around each other and their faces were barely two inches away. Adriana looked up and down at the gorgeous man before her realizing they were still hugging so she put her arms down, knowing that her cheeks were most probably sporting a vivid shade of red ―and hating it!

She waited for Jensen to mimic her movements and let go of her; however, he seemed completely oblivious of what she’d just done and just kept smiling and looking into her eyes with his hands still resting on her hips. She looked down at them and blushed ―there was no doubt this time! He noticed her uneasiness, reluctantly dropped his arms, a little blushed, too.

They stood like that, so close to one another they were almost touching. She felt his intense stare all over her, just like she’d felt it at the restaurant, and disregarded the thought immediately. What was happening to her? Why couldn’t she stop imagining those stupid things?

She felt increasingly uncomfortable and so she said “Well, looks like we can both take the elevator now, right?” trying to ease the tension.

“Yeah, but can I call you if I get scared?” He asked with a smirk.

“Sure!" She replied laughing.

“Oh, I don’t think I have your number, though.”

“Erm, no need…I live right there, apartment B.”

“You gotta be kidding me!”

“No, why? What do you mean?”

“I live right across from you.”

“Seriously? We’re neighbors?” she said cursing her stars and then added “Okay, then, so don’t doubt to knock on my door if you need a cup of sugar!”

They both laughed and smiled again. Jensen was thrilled at this discovery and kept wishing to himself "Please, don’t be taken! Please, don’t be taken!", but she felt a little sad “Great! How am I supposed to get you out of my mind now?”

“Well...I think I should probably go now.” She said jingling her keys in her hand.

“Yeah, yeah, me too. Guess I'll see you around then.”

“Sure. See ya.”

Deep down she wanted to keep chatting but she knew it'd do no good to her. The whole point was to get over him so the least she saw him, the better.  She felt torn between these two thoughts and had the feeling he also wanted to go on talking. She brushed it off her mind almost instantly, though, saying to herself “Stop dreaming! He's too perfect...’way’ out of your league!”

She then smiled at him goodbye and went into her apartment. Jensen stayed there for a few seconds wishing he'd said something to make her stay, maybe ask her over to his place for coffee or something? Anyway, he knew her name and where she lived now, so he could think of the best way to ask her out.

So, anyone reading out there? Please review...I 'adore' getting feedback!!! :-)
