“Don’t move,” I growled, at the witch standing in my tiny kitchen, and I must have been hanging around Howell too long, because it actually worked, and she sank silently into a chair.
With a parting glare, I headed for my bedroom, kneeling beside the bed to peer underneath it. “Hey, Sammy,” I whispered. “You okay?”
My not-so-little-anymore fairy cat crept out from behind a sweater I hadn’t been able to find the week before, to bump against my arm. “It’s all right,” I said, and scooped her up. “You stay here, and I’ll see what the scary lady wants, okay?”
Samhain licked my fingers and curled up on my bedspread. I went back into the kitchen and frowned at the witch, a Miss Louise Brynn.
“Another of my sisters hurt you, didn’t she?” Louise asked.
“One gave me a hard time, yeah,” I agreed. “But I’m willing to let you make your own impression on me.”
She smiled. “We’re not all bad, I promise.”
I crossed to the counter. “Can I get you something to drink?”
“Something non-alcoholic?” said Louise.
“I’ve got…” I said, opening the fridge. “No, I drank all the kool-aid. Water or orange juice?”
“Water is fine.”
I poured her a cup, then one for myself, and sat at the table across from her. “Okay,” I said, “tell me why you came to me…”
