Howell looked up at me across our desks, with his ‘why do you annoy me?’ scowl. “Rookie, don’t you have paperwork?”
“All finished,” I said, pointing to the neat stack of papers in my ‘out’ tray. “And spell-checked. So, fairies?”
He sighed. “Why would I believe in fairies, Jones?”
“Because you turn into a four-legged beastie on the full moon?” I suggested. “Because your partner drinks blood?”
Howell switched to his ‘how does your brain work?’ scowl. “There are no such things as fairies,” he said patiently. “The end.”
I grinned. “What about selkies?”
