Magnetic Memories

It started one morning, just after breakfast. It was a rare in-the-field day for Sam- even as head of the SGC, she was still the expert on alien technology- which meant an extra early start for her. Jack barely had time to catch her for a kiss in between getting small children up and dressed, let alone find out where she was going. Usually, it was a well-explored world with a puzzle they needed her brain for, but her tactical skills were just as valuable as her scientific genius, and he could never be sure she was safe.

He didn't notice her message until mid-morning snack and a trip to the fridge for juice boxes- she'd arranged the plastic magnetic letters to read 'PX-334'. When Jack got a minute, he looked it up on Sam's spare laptop and grinned. Science geek paradise, nothing to worry about.

When Sam got back that night, she found another planetary designation under hers- 'P3X-595'.

"P3X-595, Jack?" she asked dryly, slicing up the loaf of bread she'd picked up to go with the pasta he was making.

He grinned over his shoulder at her from the stove. "Don't you remember that one, Carter?" he asked. "When you took off your-"

"Yes, I remember," she interrupted, and A.J. giggled. "Oh, you think that's funny?"

The three-year-old grinned, an exact replica of her father's expression. "Daddy's been telling off-world stories," she said.

"Only the good ones," Jack assured her.

"Oh," said Sam, "then you told them about the mission to P2X-962-"

"Carter..."

"- where you kept trying to impress that chieftaness-"

"Carter..."

"- and you ended up in the ceremonial fountain?"

Jack pouted, but both children were giggling and she could see the laughter in his eyes.

The next morning, the fridge read ' P4X-639'.
