“A rose?”

I wasn’t sure I had heard Holmes correctly, but he grinned.

“Indeed, Watson.”

“I fail to see how such a flower reminds you of me.”

His expression softened. “The rose can never see its own beauty. Cannot know what it is like to live only in a fog, until suddenly there blooms warmth and color.”

“Holmes,” I said, feigning shock. “That is positively sentimental.”

“Merely an analogy,” he replied, though with a smile in his eyes. “Surely as a man of letters, you recognize the literary device.”

“Yes, of course,” I said, and pulled him into a kiss.
