Long Lost“You have her eyes,” said Sara, when Colin had pulled back the curtain on his mother’s portrait. He usually kept it open, now, but had closed it that afternoon for a dramatic reveal he knew his new friend would enjoy. “You’re lucky. I don’t resemble my mama at all.”

“You don’t?” asked Mary, who had come along as chaperone - it would have been unseemly for a young lady to visit a young gentleman’s bedroom without an escort.

“Oh, no,” said Sara. “My papa used to tell me about her. She was blonde and rosy, and I certainly am not.”

“I rather like the way you look,” said Colin.

She smiled at him. “Thank you, Colin. I’ve gotten used to it myself. And I believe I look better, now that I am filled out again.”

“Oh, yes,” Mary agreed. “I was quite an ugly child when I came to Misselthwaite. I look much more like my mother now, and the Memsahib was very pretty, as I recall.”

Sara paused. “People always seem to think I should be sad that my mother is gone,” she said. “But I never knew her. When Papa talked of her, she seemed like something out of a fairy story, rather than a real woman.”

“I sometimes feel that way, too,” said Colin. “How am I supposed to miss someone I never knew?”

“When I first went to Miss Minchin’s and became Lottie’s mother,” said Sara, for her companions were familiar with those events, “I told her a story about how our mothers were beautiful angels watching us from heaven. I wasn’t sure I believed it, then, and I’m not sure I do now. But if it is true, and our mothers can see us, I’m sure yours is very proud of the fine young man you’ve become.”

He smiled. “I think she’d be happy I found such wonderful friends.”
