Hands Off

“Hey, Cas, how come you’ve never touched my soul?”

They were working in one of the Bunker’s back rooms, cataloging a cache of weapons they’d found. Cas was a shelf ahead of Dean, using his angelic senses to be sure that none of the weapons were cursed or otherwise dangerous, and he turned, frowning.

“I have, Dean, when I pulled you from hell. You simply don’t remember.”

“That was different,” said Dean. “I mean the hand-through-the-chest thing you did with Sam and Bobby. Why haven’t you done that with me?”

“For several reasons,” Cas said, still frowning. “The first being that it is extremely painful.”

“So? I can take it.”

The angel’s expression softened. “You have the ability to bear great suffering, Dean, but that doesn’t mean I want to inflict it on you without cause.”

“It can’t be that bad,” Dean protested.

“Nevertheless, I hope you never need to find out.

“C’mon, Cas…”

“There are other reason. Privacy, for example. When my grace touches a soul, I’m able to read that person’s emotions, sometimes their thoughts.”

“Like a Vulcan Mind Meld, huh?” said Dean. “Yeah, I could see how you wouldn’t want that with me. All that darkness in there… it must have been bad even before the Mark of Cain and becoming a demon.”

Cas caught his shoulder. “Dean,” he said, gently, “I have touched your mind and walked in your dreams. You have the greatest capacity for love and forgiveness of any human I have ever met. Your soul still shines with the radiance of the Righteous Man.”

“Then why?” Dean repeated.

Cas sighed. “Because then the temptation would be too great.”

“What?”

“When I touched your soul in hell,” said Cas, “there were no barriers between us, no bodies to separate us. Our profound bond formed in that instant - and if your soul was that intense when we were strangers, imagine how it would feel now. When we have fought side-by-side, when we have died to protect each other, when I know that I-”

He broke off abruptly, and Dean frowned. “What?”

Cas took a deep breath. “Now that I know that I love you.”

“Like… like family?”

“No,” the angel said, sadly.

“Oh,” said Dean. “That’s… Cas.”

“I hadn’t meant to say anything,” said Cas. “We don’t have to discuss it.”

“Of course we do!” said Dean. “You didn’t even give me a chance to say that I love you, too.”

“Oh,” said Cas.

Dean smiled. “Now we’ve got that cleared up, what do you say we do something about it?”

“I believe our work here can wait until another time,” Cas agreed.

“Awesome,” said Dean, and kissed him.
