Watering

“Ugh,” said Jack, as SG-1 stepped through the stargate and into a curtain of pouring rain.

“It’s just a localized rainstorm, sir,” said Sam, smiling. “According to the MALP’s meteorological data, it shouldn’t last more than an hour or so.”

“Oh, goodie.”

“And the MALP didn’t show anyone near the gate for the last few days,” added Daniel. “So either this planet is uninhabited or they don’t travel much.”

“Maybe they migrate someplace else for the rainy season,” Jack suggested.

“It really is just a rainstorm, sir.”

“By the rules of chance, O’Neill,” put in Teal’c, “some worlds must be just as they appear.”

“Yeah, yeah, okay,” he grumbled, pulling the collar of his jacket closer around his neck to protect from the additional water dripping from the ever-present off-world trees.

Jack let the sound of the rain mix with Daniel’s speculation about what kind of civilization they might find so that they formed a sort of white noise, as they trudged up a slight incline. Just as the rain began to slow - almost an hour on the dot, of course Sam was right - they crested the ridge and emerged from the trees.

“Oh, wow,” breathed Daniel.

The shallow valley below them was a riot of color, flowers and plants of every size and shape, some recognizable as relatives of Earth varieties and some completely alien. Droplets of rain clung to the leaves and petals, casting tiny rainbows into the air around them.

“It’s incredible,” said Sam. “The different plant species… We should collect some samples and- Sir?”

When she’d turned to continue down the other side of the ridge, Jack had caught her arm.

He smiled. “There’s plenty of time to pick flowers for the plant nerds. But we’re on an alien planet and for once, nobody and nothing is trying to kill us. So, for a few minutes, can we just… look?”

Sam smiled back. “It is a pretty great view.”

“And a pleasant odor,” added Teal’c, as the wind shifted a sweet-smelling breeze over them.

“Yeah,” agreed Daniel.

And SG-1 were quiet, just looking at the flowers.
