Pre-Date

“Why do I always have to be the janitor?” grumbled Tony, rolling his trash cart across the university quad.

“Because you’re so believable at it,” said McGee. He didn’t look up from his laptop, every inch the harried college student.

“And I do not see why I must wait in the car,” added Ziva.

“Can it, all of you,” snapped Gibbs, and his team chorused, “Yes, boss.”

In a much softer tone, be continued, “Sorry to drag you into a case on your birthday, Duck.”

Ducky smiled up from the faux term papers of his professor disguise. “Not at all, I think it’s quite thrilling. I don’t often get to see you in action.”

“Hopefully won’t be much action. These ROTC kids are in over their heads and we’re doing this quietly. Any sign of them?”

Gibbs had a good view of most of the quad, while Ducky watched the side he couldn’t see without turning.

“Not yet,” said Ducky, then smiled. “I’m afraid I’m a little distracted by how dashing you look in your bow tie.”

“Very dapper, boss,” agreed Tony.

“Radio silence, DiNozzo,” Gibbs snapped, but he reached across the table to take Ducky’s hand.

“Boss, I think I’ve got them,” said McGee. “Your three o’clock.”

Ducky glanced over. “Yes, those are the students I heard talking last week.”

“Good,” said Gibbs. “McGee, approach carefully. DiNozzo, position for backup.”

“On it, boss.”

Across the quad, McGee looked at his watch and began packing up his laptop like he was late for class, while Tony jogged over to yell at a student who had just thrown an aluminum can in the trash instead of the recycling.

In what looked like a complete accident, they both bumped into the group of ROTC students.

“NCIS,” said Tony, too low for anyone else to hear unless they had earwigs. “You’ll be in a lot less trouble if you come with us quietly.”

“Don’t let a stupid mistake ruin your Navy career before it starts,” added McGee.

“Yeah,” said one of the kids, on a breath.

Tony clapped him on the shoulder, and they all started toward the parking lot.

Gibbs drained his coffee and stood. “C’mon, Duck, I’ll buy you lunch.”

“You have a case to finish, my dear.”

“The team can handle it,” Gibbs shrugged.

“Thanks, boss,” said McGee.

"Have fun on your date,” added Tony.

Ducky smiled. “Then, let’s go.”
