Party Time
“Are you sure you can’t get the door open?” David asked again.
Normally, he wouldn’t have asked more than once, but today was different. Today was his birthday, and he’d been hoping to finish his work early and persuade Evan to join him for an early - and private - celebration.
But Rodney had been insistent that he needed a botanist without the ATA gene to do a preliminary survey of a possibly-botany lab. As usual, Rodney was irritating and persistent, so David had agreed, just to get it over with.
But then, the lab door had sealed shut, blocking radio communication and refusing to open again.
Rodney scowled. “I’m very sure,” he said. “Exactly the same as the six times you’ve asked in the last ten minutes.”
“Isn’t there anything else you could try?” David pressed.
“No! I have tried everything! It wasn’t even my idea to-”
Rodney broke off abruptly, and David frowned. “Whose idea was it, then.”
“Oh, no, I told him this was a bad idea.”
“Told who?”
Rodney sighed. “Lorne. I told him I was terrible at improvising, but he asked me to keep you busy this afternoon.”
“Why?” asked David, heart sinking.
“Look, you didn’t hear it from me, and you’d better act surprised when we get out of here.”
“Surprised? Oh. Oh!” David grinned. “He planned a surprise party! Then we’re not really stuck?”
“No, we’re stuck,” said Rodney. “I said I was no good at improv. This lab really did need a botanist to look it over before we start activating things, but it didn’t need to be today. I just moved it up the priority list when Major Lorne asked.”
“And we are stuck.”
Rodney scowled again. “These doors are ten thousand years old and probably water damaged. And I didn’t come prepared for major repairs. But I was supposed to have you to the mess hall about, " he checked his watch, “now, so they’ll notice you missing, at least.”
As if on cue, there was a loud bang from the other side of the door.
“David?”
“I’m okay, Evan,” he called back. “So’s Rodney.”
“Good.” That was Colonel Sheppard. “Just hold tight, we’ll have this open in a jiffy.”
“As if there’s anywhere for us to go,” grumbled Rodney.
There was another thump, then a grinding sound, then the door slid open a few inches.
Evan smiled. “Hey. You really okay?”
David smiled back. “I’m great.”
“Yeah, yeah,” snapped Rodney. “Save the mushy stuff. Also - maybe Dr. Zipper here can make it through that little gap, but I’m gonna need a little more room.”
David laughed, and moved to help with the door.
He had a party to get to.
