Happy Days
“There,” said Mary, standing up from the flowerbed. “Now, I can- What?”
Dickon smiled at her frown. “Tha have never looked more beautiful.”
“I am covered in dirt,” she protested. “Ridiculous man.”
“Aye,” he agreed, still smiling. “But tha married me anyway.”
Mary laughed. “That I did. The happiest day of my life.”
“And mine,” said Dickon.
He pulled her into his arms, dirt and all, then began to spin them slowly around, humming a folk song he’d used to play on his flute. Mary leaned her head against his shoulder, and they danced until the light began to fade.
