“Well,” said Sam, “As a kid, I always kind of looked up to Atticus Finch.”
He tried to sign along with his words, but fumbled spelling the name and Eileen frowned, “Who?”
Sam said it slower, “The dad from To Kill a Mockingbird,” and she nodded.
“You wanted to be a lawyer,” said Eileen, sympathetically.
“Yeah.” It didn’t hurt as much, that he hadn’t. “And what about you? Who did you want to be when you grew up?”
Eileen grinned. “Xena, Warrior Princess.”
“At least one of us achieved our goals,” said Sam.
“Damn right,” she agreed, and kissed him.
