Mal reaches for the ramp release controls at the same time as Inara. Their fingers brush and time seems to stop.
It could happen right now.
Just a few inches and he could hold her hand, proper-like. A few inches more and he could kiss her, slide his arm around her waist, twist his fingers into her hair…
Inara looks up at him and he feels suddenly too hot. For a moment, her face is a reflection of his, the want and hope clear in her eyes.
Then, she smiles sadly and pulls away.
It won’t happen now.
But someday…
