Sara had made no secret of her hobby.
There were only so many things a person could do for fun aboard a time-traveling spaceship and even fewer that were both physically active and relaxing. Mick had laughed at her exactly once before she threw a knitting needle that imbedded itself into the hull beside his head - he returned it with the request for a scarf.
Well, it was more of a challenge than a request, but Sara made him the scarf anyway, with yarn in variegated yellow, orange and red. Mick loved it, and wore it all the time, which of course meant that she had to make a scarf for everyone else, too - soft blue for Ray, deep red for Zari, variegated sepia tones for Nate, stripes of dark blue and hot pink for Charlie, black with tiny threads of silver for Ava, even one in an ombre of browns and golds dropped off in Zambesi for Amaya.
It was all good practice, but by the time she delivered a red-and-black striped scarf to Jax in 2019, Sara was getting kind of sick of knitting long rectangles.
It was time for something more difficult.
Or not.
“It’s terrible,” Sara sighed, staring at the lumpy bundle in her lap.
“Of course it’s not,” said Ava.
“It’s awful.”
“No, it’s…” Ava took the bundle and pulled it over her head, “It’s soft,” she said, from inside it, then managed to get her arms in the sleeves and pop her head through the top. “And warm.”
Sara laughed. “It’s uneven.”
“It’s asymmetrical,” said Ava. “Avant-garde.”
“Look, one sleeve is longer than the other.”
“That just means I can use my chrono-watch without the sleeve getting in the way,” said Ava. “I love it. I’m going to wear it all the time.”
“I’ll knit you another one,” Sara told her. “A better one.”
Ava got new sweaters regularly after that, but she never gave up the first one Sara had made for her - at least, not until their daughter stole it.
