Watching Over
Ben Weatherstaff still watched over the garden wall, sometimes.
Only when the weather was fine - he was hardly a young man anymore and his rheumatism wouldn’t allow him to go clambering about the way he once had. Not that he had to look over the wall, either.
The garden wasn’t kept locked anymore, the curtain of ivy pulled aside and the door always open. And even if it hadn’t been, as an early convert to Master Colin’s magic, Ben would have always found himself welcome.
But, sometimes, he just liked to watch quietly, to catch glimpses through the roses that now grew thick and healthy of children growing into equally strong and healthy young people.
Master Colin was now a common sight around Mistlethwaite, as was his father. The two Craven men now saw to the running of the manor together, going over their ledger books or climbing out onto the roof supervising the installation of new tiles. Miss Mary, Ben saw even more frequently, as she had taken over responsibility for all the manor gardens, coaxing vegetables and herbs and flowers of very kind from the Yorkshire soil.
But they all still came into the secret garden, where the magic had all begun.
Ben leaned his forearms on the stone wall, smiling to himself as the roses opened to the rising sun.
