Coming Along

“Hey,” said Dean, from the library doorway. “I’m going on a beer run. Anybody need anything?”

Sam didn’t look up from his laptop. “Nope. I’m good.”

Castiel closed the book he had been looking through. “I’ll come with you.”

Dean nodded and they headed for the garage. Now that Cas was at full angelic power again, he didn’t feel the cold, but he knew more about behaving like a human, so he stopped to take a jacket from the rack while Dean picked up the keys to the Impala.

As Cas got into the passenger side of the car, pulling on a scarf that Donna had knitted for him in a fit of domesticity, Dean paused, just looking at him.

In the years since Cas had moved permanently into the Bunker, he had found a compromise between his original Holy Tax Accountant getup and a Hunter’s usual plaid. He looked much more comfortable now, more sure of his own person, and Dean liked it.

“Hey, Cas,” he said, starting the car and easing her out of the garage. “Why are you always coming with me?”

The angel frowned. “I was under the impression you appreciated the additional manpower. You usually buy a large enough quantity of beer to require two people to carry it.”

Dean frowned back. “That’s not - I mean, I do, but - I mean, just in general, Cas.”

“Oh. Because I choose to do so.”

“C’mon, man, that’s not a real answer.”

“You forget, Dean, that free will is still relatively new to me. I did the will of Heaven for millennia, but now I can choose for myself.”

“Yeah, but…” said Dean. “I still don’t get it. I know we’ve got that profound bond and all, but why choose me?”

“Because you’re asking me that question.”

He scowled. “Are you being vague on purpose?”

“No,” said Cas. “You try always to do good in the world - you don’t always succeed,” he added, when Dean looked ready to protest. “But you try.”

“So?” Dean mumbled.

“I make my own choices, now. If I must have a purpose, why not choose to protect this world and the people here? If I am to belong to a family, why not choose one where I am wanted and valued? If I am to remain here on Earth, why not stay with the one human I cherish above all others?”

“Cas…”

“Since leaving heaven,” the angel said, softly, “I have had trouble determining what is right. When I am beside you, Dean Winchester, the path is much more clear.”

“I…” Dean began, then took his right hand off the steering wheel, holding it out until Cas took it. “I don’t know about all that. But I do know that I want you with me, Cas, as long as I can have you.”

“Forever, Dean,” said Cas, and for the first time, Dean thought he could actually believe it.
