No Good Reason
Dean scowled as soon as Castiel’s hand left the radio dial, letting bouncy pop music fill the cab of the truck. “Do we have to listen to-?”
“Driver picks the music,” Cas interrupted smugly. “Shotgun shuts his cakehole.”
“You know, sometimes I regret teaching you about free will,” Dean grumbled.
Cas reached over to squeeze his knee. “No, you don’t.”
“I do when you use it against me!”
“No, you don’t,” the angel repeated.
Dean snorted a laugh. “No, I don’t. But do we have to listen to this… this girly crap?”
“Yes,” said Cas. “I enjoy it. You enjoy it, too, Dean, I don’t know why you always complain.”
Dean sighed. “Being human comes with a lot of baggage, Cas, even before you throw in hunting monsters and the crappy way I was raised. There’s a lot of pressure to, you know, ‘be a man’ and it’s hard to let that go.”
“In your culture, being a man seems mostly to involve refusing to enjoy things for no good reason.”
That startled a laugh from Dean. “Yeah, I guess it does.”
“But I am not human. I won’t judge you by the ridiculous standards of your species. I would much prefer that you enjoy yourself, no matter what.”
Dean caught his hand, lacing their fingers together. “I know, Cas. You’re right. And you know what? Let’s turn it up.”
He reached for the dial, and Cas grinned.
