Family Holiday

“I know what Christmas is,” said Ziva, “I have just never participated before.”

“You’re still not participating,” Tony grumbled, “or you’d be helping us carry this tree.”

“Yeah!” called McGee. He held the trunk of the large evergreen tree while Tony was trying to maneuver the top up Gibbs’s front steps. “You could at least open the door.

Ziva arched an eyebrow at him, but ducked around the tree to push open the unlocked front door.

“The tree’s here!” cried Abby, as Tony stumbled into the living room. At his frown, she added, “I’m glad you’re here, too,” and kissed his cheek.

“Thanks, Abs,” he said. “Where do we put this thing?”

“Right here beside the fireplace,” said Ducky. “Where’s that tree stand…?”

“I have it, Dr. Mallard,” said Jimmy, and helped him arrange it in the proper place.

McGee gratefully dropped the trunk into the other end and Tony, holding the top as it lifted suddenly, let out a surprised yelp, “Watch it, McClumsy!”

“You watch it,” his partner retorted.

Ziva hid a smile. “I thought Christmas was all about peace and goodwill toward men.”

“Sure,” said Gibbs, appearing in the kitchen doorway. “But it wouldn’t be the same without childish family arguments.”

“I do not see how arguments can be a good thing,” she mused.

“No, it’s not!” cried Tony, from where they were still adjusting the tree on the other side of the room. “Ziva, tell him!”

“I really don’t think-” Jimmy began, but McGee interrupted, “No, way, she’ll agree with me.”

“You’d better go help ‘em, Ziver,” said Gibbs.

“But I know nothing about Christmas,” Ziva protested.

“Yeah, but you know them. Have fun. Duck, give me a hand in the kitchen?”

“I-” she tried, but they’d already left.

“Ziva!” called Tony, again, only to be pulled back into his argument with McGee.

Abby grinned and came over to Ziva. “It’s probably best to let them work it out for themselves,” she said.

“Good idea.”

“And I know this isn’t your holiday,” Abby continued, “but I’m really glad you’re here.”

Ziva smiled. “Me, too.”
