Word spread, slow but steady, after the wedding.
The palace had always been a good place to work, but after the crown prince’s new bride had come to live there, things had changed.
Now, simple but hearty food was always available for the servants. Now, worn shoes were replaced and materials given for mending clothes. Now, fires in the servants’ quarters were as warm as in the royals’ rooms, and every bed had a thick carpet beside it.
The princess, the word said, had once been a servant herself, and her children - and their children, and their children - always remembered.
