Done Right

“You know, there’s going to be a party later,” said Clint.

He balanced the bakery box on top of his six-pack of beer as he made his way from the kitchen to the living room.

“I’m trying to keep an open mind,” he continued. “I mean, I do like being the center of attention. And your birthday is one of the few times you can shamelessly hog the spotlight. But I’ve never had a giant fancy birthday party. All those people to mingle with, tiny fancy foods, a cake made of stuff I’ve probably never heard of… On the other hand, I’ve never had a giant fancy birthday party. Maybe I’ll love it.”

Clint set his beer and baked goods on the battered side table next to the couch. He flopped down against one armrest and pulled the purple fleece blanket from the back over his legs.

“But I also kind of like it when it’s just you and me. You won’t judge me for eating an entire dozen cookies, especially on my birthday, right?”

The other end of the couch dipped with the addition of another weight. Lucky rested his front paws on Clint’s lap, head tilted in a silent request for scratches.

Clint obliged, and Lucky flopped against his side in canine contentment.

“What do you think, boy? Beer and cookies? Cookies and beer? How about we find a movie and see how we feel?”

He picked up the remote and flicked through a few channels - talk shows, infomercials, a movie he kind of recognized but dubbed in Spanish - then quickly backtracked.

“This one is a classic,” Clint told Lucky, as a rooster Alan-a-Dale played the movie’s overture on his lute. “You’ll love it.”

Lucky didn’t answer, but Clint grinned. “This is how you do a birthday right.”
