Buy War Bonds
“I don’t understand,” said Teyla, as her team roared with laughter. “How are the attachments of war amusing?”
Most of them had been gathered in the common living area of McKay Tower when Rodney burst in with an incoherent announcement about John and war bonds.
“Not emotional bonds,” Lorne told her, still smiling. “A bond is a way for the government to make money. Well, borrow money. The government takes your money to use right away, and you get a certificate to keep for a certain amount of time, then they pay you back.”
“And wars are especially expensive,” added Cadman. “During World War Two, America needed lots of money, so they had drives - um, like in-person commercials, to encourage people to buy war bonds.”
Teyla nodded, “And Colonel Sheppard was in this drive?”
“Was he,” Rodney said, gleefully. “There were chorus girls involved.”
John snorted. “You seem pretty chipper about that.”
“Please, they’re all geriatric by now,” he replied, dismissively. “Not that anything happened anyway, I’m sure.”
“A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell,” John said, primly.
“Why are we talking about this, anyway?” asked Ronon. “The war bond thing is in all the history books.”
“Books, yes,” Rodney agreed. “But I have video.”
“Really?” asked Cadman, eagerly. “Can we watch it?”
They all turned to look at John, who threw up his hands with a laugh. “Fine, why not? It’s not like any of you could lose more respect for me after we’ve been living together for six months.”
“We respect you loads, boss,” said Lorne.
“Thanks,” John drawled.
Teyla stood. “I shall make popcorn,” she said, clearly happy for the excuse to have one of her favorite earth foods.
As the rest of the team scattered to gather snacks and other movie supplies, Rodney caught John’s arm.
“Hey,” he said, softly. “I thought this would be funny, but if you don’t want us to watch this, we won’t.”
John smiled and pulled him in for a long kiss. “I appreciate you giving me an out, but it’s really okay. It was… As much as I hated being kept from the front, the bond drives were important. My tour raised a lot of money to send supplies to soldiers who really needed it. Plus,” he added, “that costume might have been silly, but it made my ass look great.”
“It really did,” Rodney agreed, and John kissed him again.
