Walk in the Park

Nicole looked deeply into Alex’s eyes, gazing in the flecks of gold in their dark irises - then blinked.

“Ha!” cried Alex, triumphant, as Nicole blinked several more times.

“How do you do that?” she demanded. “I felt like my eyeballs were drying out.”

Alex shrugged. “Just naturally moist, I guess.”

“Ew.”

“But since I’m a gracious winner,” they continued, “let’s stop and I’ll buy you a soda. To keep your eyes moist.”

“Stop saying moist,” laughed Nicole, as they headed for the kiosk in the corner of the park.

It was a crisp fall day and they had nowhere to be, so the friends continued down the winding park path.

“We should do this more often,” said Nicole. “We’re both so busy, we hardly get to see each other.”

“Yeah,” Alex agreed. They tucked their hand into the crook of Nicole’s arm and leaned their head on her shoulder. “This is nice.”

She laughed. “Aren’t you too tall to be doing that?”

“Yes,” said Alex, straightening again. “Ow.”

“It is nice, though,” said Nicole, as they rounded a bend in the path. At this time of afternoon, this part of the park was deserted, nothing but trees and birdsong all around them. “It’s like we’re the only people in the world.”

“Hmm,” her friend agreed. “As nice as that would be for a while, I think we’d need someone who could cook.”

“We are very terrible at it,” she said, so solemnly that they both laughed.

Alex trailed off into giggles, “Then it’s a good thing your girlfriend is so good at it.”

“She’s the best.”

“You think if I told her that, too, she’d make enough for one more?” they asked.

Nicole smacked their shoulder playfully. “I already told her you were coming over for dinner.”

Alex smiled. “Perfect.”
