The Castle Job

“Oh!” said Castle, into the silence of the standoff. “You’re Parker!”

Beckett didn’t take her eyes off the man with the ponytail and the fighter’s stance. “Not now, Castle.”

“But she’s Parker,” he protested. “The Parker.”

“Does that explain why she’s in our living room?”

“Actually, yes,” said the blonde woman, presumably Parker.

The ponytailed man scowled, “This apartment was supposed to be empty.”

Beckett got the impression he wasn’t talking to her, but answered anyway, “We wanted it to look that way, so we could fool-”

“Oleg Sidorov, Russian mob boss,” interrupted a new voice. A man came out of the office, hands in the pockets of his suit. He glanced at Castle, then smiled at Beckett. “Captain Kate Beckett.”

“And who are you?” she snapped.

“My name is Nate Ford. I think we can help each other.”

For a long moment, there was silence as the two groups continued to stare each other down. Then, there was a sudden peal of feminine laughter from the hallway outside, and everyone froze as Martha’s voice said, “Yes, yes, of course, darling…”

The front door opened, admitting Martha. She was smiling at the younger woman coming in behind her, but frowned at the sight that met them.

“Richard, why haven’t you offered our guests any drinks?”

“Well, I…” he floundered.

Beckett moved closer to her. “Martha, do you have any idea who these people are?”

“Of course, Kate, dear. This is Sophie, she helped me run that drama camp in Boston I enjoyed so much. And these are her people. They’re here to help you take down that dreadful mob boss.”

“She’s a cop!” protested the man with the ponytail. “You can’t just let her into the con!”

Sophie smiled. “I’ve heard some of the detective’s exploits from Martha. I believe Captain Beckett will be more concerned with the spirit of the law than its letter.”

“So you told her the truth,” said Nate Ford.

She shrugged. “Sometimes, the truth is the best con.”

“Then they’re working with us?” Castle asked eagerly.

“Yes,” said Beckett, reluctantly.

Martha smiled. “Drinks, anyone?”
