More Tea

“Jethro, really, do stop fussing.”

Gibbs sat back on his heels from where he had been adding wood to his fireplace, an affronted look on his face, and Ducky chuckled.

“I appreciate the concern, my dear, but really I am fine.”

“You’re too old to have been out in the cold that long,” said Gibbs, which might have been quite rude if Ducky hadn’t been able to hear the worry and love behind the words.

“I was bundled up very warmly,” he said. “Your team was at their most efficient, helping me inspect and transport the body back to the nice warm autopsy room.”

“It’s not that warm,” Gibbs protested, turning back to the fire.

“I was quite comfortable,” Ducky said firmly. “And I certainly wasn’t going to call in Dr. Palmer and make him miss the father-daughter sleepover at the aquarium.”

“No, he’s been looking forward to it for the last month. Father-daughter time is special.”

Ducky’s smile turned bittersweet, but he knew better than to comment on how Gibbs had softened toward Jimmy once he’d become a father, how Victoria reminded him of his own lost daughter.

“Besides,” he said, more brightly, “I was very well taken care of today, by every single member of your team.. I believe I’ve drunk more hot tea today than even an Englishman should - each one of them, separately, ‘just happened’ to wander down to autopsy with a fresh cup.”

The agent couldn’t quite suppress a smile. “Does that mean you wouldn’t want another one?”

“If it will get you to come and sit beside me, I would love a cup,” said Ducky.

“Yeah, okay…”

A few minutes later, Ducky cradled both hands around a steaming mug, keeping it steady as Gibbs settled the blanket around them.

“How’s that?”

Ducky smiled. “Perfect.”
