Summary: Some habits are hard to break, even in Hawaii.
On Vacation
“I’m sorry,” sighed Evan.
David paused, antiseptic wipe suspended in midair. “For what?”
Evan had waved off the EMT who had tried to treat him, telling her to start with the people who were actually hurt. But David had found a first aid kit somewhere and begun cleaning the shallow cuts along Evan’s arms.
“I promised you sun and sand and all the tropical flowers you could find. Instead, I found trouble.”
“You wouldn’t be you if you didn’t rush in to help people,” said David, as he finished with the wipes and smoothed an adhesive bandage over the worst cut. “And I happen to like you.”
Evan smiled. “Thanks.”
“Major Lorne?”
They both looked up to see a tall, dark-haired man standing beside the boulder Evan had chosen for a seat. “I’m Steve McGarrett, Honolulu PD,” the man said, then indicated another, shorter man beside him, “This is my partner, Danny Williams.”
David frowned. “The major already talked to that other officer.”
“Yeah, we got your statement,” said McGarrett. “Just wanted to say thanks in person. Your quick thinking probably saved a lot of lives.”
“I-” Evan broke off, laughing. “I was about to say that it’s my job, but I’m on vacation. I guess it’s hard to turn it off.”
“I know what that’s like,” snorted Williams, with a side glance at his partner.
“I’ll have an officer give you a ride back to your hotel,” McGarrett said, ignoring him, and held out a card. “If you think of anything else, or if you need anything while you’re here, don’t hesitate to call.”
Lorne took it, then paused. “Actually, do you know any… secret local spots to see native flowers? Just to look at!” he added quickly. “David is a botanist.”
McGarrett smiled. “I know a place.”
