Legacy was a word Mariemeia had come to loathe. As soon as she was allowed she started dying her hair and got colored contact lenses. She used a different name -- and even though her guardian gave consent, she reminded the girl she shouldn't disrespect her father's memory. Mariemeia agreed with her, even though she had no memories of her own in that regard. She still appreciated her father's vision.
But there were people who didn't appreciate what she had done in the name of militaristic vision, and some did not forgive just because she had been a child. They knew her face, and she decided she preferred to pretend to be an average pre-teen -- also because she wanted to be an average pre-teen, not the rich daughter of a dead noble house. She was heir to the Bartons and the Khushrenadas but wanted to grow up in the shadow of neither. She left it to Lady Une and her second cousin Dorothy to manage those houses, and they had both accepted. They were too old to cover up their involvement, if they had even wanted to. Dorothy would ever be aggressive and gregarious. Lady Une had handed over command of the Preventers in order to care for Mariemeia after the incident, but still received calls as an adviser.
Meanwhile, Mariemeia found she always had a bodyguard of sorts, whether an adult Preventer escorting her around town or a young one who looked just young enough to be disguised as a classmate. She went on wanting to erase the incident and simply grow up as a normal girl.
