Revelations in the Night

I stayed late today to get some practice in, and I’m learned that I should really put an alarm on my phone. When I left the building it was already dark, and I must say, the school looks different at night. Without all the noise, all the people and laughter, without the atmosphere, it’s really quite a solemn place.

Things always seem different in the darkness. I’ve always found the black of night to be interesting. Everything is clear then, without the glimmer and glitz of daytime. Or perhaps it’s just easier to see the truth when there’s no light to blind us.

It’s strange how things can change in a matter of hours. I mean, I like my school. The people are usually nice enough, the campus is pretty, and the classes are good. Any given day you could shoot pictures for a brochure.

But tonight, I saw someone eat out of the garbage on my way home. They were picking through the trash with a bag of cans in their hand, and I didn’t think anything of it, it didn’t even occur to me. Then he pulled something from the bin and took a bite.

It was the strangest thing… I’ve seen him around, and I always thought he was just recycling. He doesn’t seem to be much older than me, I never thought anything of him being around the school. Surely I’m not the first person to see him, but the only other people around just walked right on by. I couldn’t just walk away, I can’t stand the thought of people who can be so heartless.

There wasn’t a lot of places still open, but I managed to get him some real food to eat. He was so grateful… I just hope he takes care of himself, he seems really nice.

cold, contemplations, long day..., ic
