Who on the Red Sox would say, "It's a real catch-22"?

Anyone? Or is this not something that anyone on the current roster would plausibly say? Does anyone on the current roster... like... readFor surrounding plot reasons it cannot be Beckett or Lowell. Anyone else on the 40-man would work ( Read more... )

Do you mean you think the expression's too old-fashioned, or too clever, or something else?

I mean someone who hasn't read Catch 22, or at least heard of it, probably wouldn't use the expression. Especially a ballplayer. I would guess most of these guys haven't read it, but if there's someone on the team who's a little bit brainier (Scherzer on the Tigers, for instance, or old school Mussina on the Yankees), I can run with it. I've been trying to think of someone on the current squad who has that rep, but I'm blanking.

I haven't read it and I know the expression and use it all the time. I must admit I didn't even know it was a novel first!

Dude. You should read it. It's a classic.

And the saying will become much more interesting! ;)

Jed Lowrie? He went to Stanford!

Lowell was my instant answer, unfortunately. Beckett would actually be a close second; he's unexpectedly articulate, and weirdly facile with idioms. I'm thinking Wakefield. Or maybe Jed Lowrie, who went to Stanford. But mostly Wakefield.

See, I think Lowell and Wake are both veteran-smart, but I don't know how book-smart they are. It can't be Lowell anyways, because he just spoke and the catch-22 comment is a response to him. I think it's probably going to be Lowrie. Can't believe I forgot he went to Stanford!

Josh Beckett always surprises me since he always strikes me as super redneck-y but startlingly smart.

Isn't he a Scrabble fiend or something? I feel like I read that once, but it might have been something my brain just made up.

I feel like Wake's wise advice is more baseball and life-management related, maybe less with the literary allusions. ;)
