Yay! Halloween!

Tonight was the "dry run" for my costume. I think it went pretty well. There's still a bunch of things I'd like to do with it, but most of them will never get done. At least not for this year.

What I did realize was that the costume concept is kind of obscure in this day and age. What I was originally going for was a very classic, retro (pre-1950s) scifi look. I've been using Flash Gordon as a reference point because, well, I grew up with the character.

Unfortunately, it seems that most people are only familiar with Flash from the 1980 film. While I love that movie for what it is, it is far from the dashing iconic space hero I was going for. The first Flash Gordon I remember was an animated version from 1979. That cartoon was heavily based on the movie serials from the 30s and 40s.

Now, my final costume (or nearly final costume, as the case may be), is a bit removed and slightly modernized from that classic look. Mostly because, let's face it, I am not built like a dashing, iconic space hero. I look more like Denny Crane from Boston Legal than I do Captain Kirk. And I am definitely no Buster Crabbe.

I'm holding off on posting pictures until after Spooky, just so I don't spoil the costume for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. (Of course, there were numerous other cameras at Saturday's party and I'm not asking those people to not post pics... so, if you're really not curious as to what I've done, I'm sure you can find a pic from someone.)

Sunday I plan on tinkering a bit more based on tonight's experience and maybe I'll have something even more awesome worked out by Thursday. I know that, at the least, my ray gun will look better than it currently does... and I may have the chance to put together another prop or two.
