Shoes and Movement

On the way home yesterday, in preparation for both the predicted rain and the upcoming wedding I'm in, I stopped at the DSW near Pentagon City to (finally) get a new pair of every day shoes. I've been putting that off because a) I hate shopping, b) I hate shopping for shoes more and c) spending money just isn't fun when there's not enough coming in. (Though, admittedly, it seems infinitely easier to spend money on fun things than on oh-so-many of those necessary things, like shoes and clothes...)

So, for about the past decade I've been getting Sketchers. I like them. They're comfortable and only once has breaking them in lead to blisters (and that happened when I got a different style and spent my first day wearing them walking about ten times more than normal). Unfortunately, sometime over the last few years, they obviously changed the composition of the rubber that makes up the soles.

I've been wearing them down in about 6-8 months. Not a good thing in my book. The original laces should not regularly outlast the shoes.

But I like Sketchers. So I kept looking for new ones to replace the last pair. The good/bad news is that nowhere seems to carry the particular style I like in my size. In fact, as I've mentioned before, finding shoes in my size (and in the color/style I want) is kind of like a crap shoot. Very hit or miss.

New shoes were needed, though, and they needed to be black and comfortable. For the first time in about a decade, those new shoes are not Sketchers. They're Timberlands (and not the big yellow boot kind).

So far, so good. I don't feel any blisters. But I did notice that the backs of just about every other shoe out there ride about a half inch lower than the backs of the Sketchers I like. This could explain the propensity for blisters I've experienced while breaking in other shoes. I'm also thinking it could explain the tenderness in my tendons... but only time will tell on that.

In other news...

I heard back from one of the two jobs I was in the running for. No longer in the running for it. Too bad, that one would have been neat--and connected me directly with a big local college.

The other job--the one for the small company--is still very much in play. In fact, I just got off the phone with the owner. He wants me to drop by and spend a few hours working with them on Monday evening (so I don't have to leave the temp job high and dry). The competition is still between me and one other person. That's probably all going to come down to money. On my end, at least. It would be an awesome place to work, but I need money. (Which, really, it just too bad that that has to be the determining factor...)
