The Bassinet Debate

Jan 28, 2013 17:58

>>Started writing this in the "Baby Update" entry, but it got to be it's own monster. :p

>>Starting to think about making up a baby registry and such. Debating about getting a bassinet/basket/co-sleeper. There's a family bassinet, but it's too far away in AZ, so a super-generous Great Aunt offered to buy us a Moses basket that I fell in love with. Problem is, Jarrad doesn't like it as much as I do. :/ (He imagined something more like this or this, which I LOVE, but are super spendy.) I was thinking it could sit on my nightstand, so baby could be right next to me at night. -^_^- Auntie Linda thinks that might not be secure enough. Then, it's super portable during the day, so baby can sleep wherever we are. This brand also has a rocking stand sold separately (and expensively), but Oo! what about getting a diaper changing table with raised sides like this one, and set the basket on it at night? Not like baby's supposed to be in it after it learns to roll anyways (maybe still too low and too risky?). Oh! If we get a crib, right away, then the bassinet could go in there as well. I'd just have to put it right next to me.

>>I started looking again, but anything else is $70-150. So, then I've started debating on whether it's practical to get one or not. After all, we'll only be able to use it for about 5 months, and that's an awful lot of money for something that'll 1), not get much use and, 2) will become clutter after it's usefulness runs out. There aren't many convertible models that have several uses either. There's a neat bedside sleeper that converts into a play pen, but it's awfully tiny. I thought it might work as a changing table, but again, $150 is a lot of money. Even if someone were to buy it for us, I'd rather they bought us something super useful than something that won't get a long lifespan. :/

>>Auntie Linda used a car seat for Dakota for the first couple of nights, but started sleeping in bed with them soon after. I've always wanted that: to sleep with baby. However, Jarrad's super paranoid about it, and most doctors also advise against it. So, this new discovery of co-sleeping bedding (it protects baby from rolling parents) is really catching my eye right now. I even found one that packs up super small, so it wouldn't take up much space after baby is too big for it. They're still in the $50+ range, but somehow, I feel better about it. Maybe because of the storage afterwards.

>>Last option is a cradle. Jeannette offered us Lexi's old cradle, which would definitely be the cheapest option, and it would fit right next to the bed and potentially fit in any room we roam to, but then, what to do with it afterwards? Pay it forward to the next baby momma? I guess I should ask her what she'd want done with it; if she'd like it back or something.

>>Any opinions or thoughts out there? :/
