Flash FIc: Dexter plus a Very Special Guest

The lovely cereta is very faithful with the prompts, and actually inspired me to write something the other day. I have cleaned it up a little, and post it now for your reading pleasure.

Dexter Morgan wasn't much of a drinker, but sometimes a dim, out-of-the way dive was the best place for him to get some quiet and gather his thoughts. Charley's was the last unit in a shabby strip mall near the entrance to what had once been a pretty spiffy retirement community in the 1980s. The original owners were not so mobile anymore, but some of the spry ones still ventured out for a cocktail in the afternoon.

When Dexter ordered a Corona, the man he presumed was Charley drew him a Budweiser without comment. Dexter nodded, took a deep swallow, and turned to the old-timer beside him. Beneath his neatly groomed silver hair, the man's face was still handsome in a square-jawed way. He squinted thoughtfully at Dexter and said, "Haven't seen you in here before. Sure you didn't get lost?"

"Sometimes I need a place where nobody would think to find me. This whole family... home... thing can be kinda overwhelming."

The man chuckled. "It took me four wives before I realized you don't actually have to marry 'em. Especially down here. Not a lot of competition for a guy my age."

"Down here? Where you from?"

"New York, mostly. I started out as a snow bird, but I guess this is my home now. You're right, it's quiet here. No obligations."

Dexter killed his beer, and raised his eyebrows toward the other man's glass, then signaled Charley.

The barkeep drew another Bud, and poured a Canadian Club on the rocks. The older man nodded his thanks and downed the drink. Then he stood up slowly and put on a panama hat as he headed for the door.

"So long, Charley."

"See you tomorrow, Mr. Draper."
