Escapade 2021 - Vid Show Report

The short version: I thoroughly enjoyed this vid show! I can't give the vidders the feedback they deserve on all of the vids, since I didn't know all the fandoms. But I was tickled that I did recognize more of the fandoms than usual, and the vids were great!

Turn it Up/same - Guardian (TV 2018) - Naye
I ♥ Guardian so I was excited to see two Guardian vids in the show! This one builds the interactions between Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei, keeping with the building of the excitement in the song. I especially enjoyed the use of sassy!ZYL and pretty!Shen Wei early on, and then I loved the way SW's use of the glaive builds up to the moment he chops through the energy beam binding Zhao Yunlan to Ye Zun, followed by the ramifications of that moment, set to repeated chanting over the drumbeat until the tension finally breaks in both the clips and the song--that was definitely a WOW. Loved this vid!
Fit Hot Guys Have Problems Too/same - DC Extended Universe - Nestra
I'm not real familiar with the DCEU - but the song was hilarious and the clips obviously fit!
Do I Wanna' Know/same - Person of Interest - JinkyO
I really liked how this vid uses the clips and the lyrics together to unfold a story from Reese's point of view--I could feel him being drawn toward Finch, hesitant to trust, reluctant to get hurt, but unable to resist. And if I read it rightly ... it has a hopeful ending.
Criminals/same - Raffles (1977) - AurumCalendula
I know very little about Raffles except what I read in a crossover SH fic more than forty years ago. That said, the vid made me want to take a gander at the series, and especially at the relationship between Raffles and his sidekick.

I enjoyed this vid a lot, especially the way the clips play with and against the lyrics. Also the way the movement within the clips, as well as from one clip to another, works with the rhythm of the song.
Matter to You*/same - Cherry Magic - Lola
When I saw this vid, I had heard about Cherry Magic (a Japanese BL romance) from a friend, but hadn't seen it yet. I got to binge the first four eps the very next day and finished the last episode yesterday. So I can report that the vid does a great job expressing the emotional heart of the show! It's a sweet vid and if I hadn't already planned to see the show, I would have wanted to after I saw this vid.
Sunset Curve Never Gone Tour/Everybody (Backstreet's Back) - Julie and The Phantoms - ryfkah
w00t! I binged Julie and the Phantoms a few months ago with the online DCSlash group (DC as in the city), and enjoyed it a lot. This vid expressed the brightness and optimism and fun that I loved about the show, and engaged with the darkness the characters had to fight as well.
INTERMISSION (baby Yoda)
Five minutes of Baby Yoda in his floating crib going through a circular tunnel, with a mashup of "Gonna Fly Now" and the Mandalorian theme playing in the background and a helpful counter, counting down to the end of intermission/beginning of the second half of the show.
Levitating/same - The Mandalorian - talitha78
This was so much fun! The vidder plays with taking the lyrics literally - we see Din Djarin (the POV character) flying in the air with his jetpack on the line "I'm levitating," and we get little Grogu anytime the "you" is addressed as "baby," while "starlight always seems to refer to reflections in Grogu's eyes. It's adorable. I suppose you could read it as Din Djarin/Grogu, but I saw it more as the joy that Grogu has unexpectedly brought into Din Djarin's life.
Chasing Cars/same - The Lost Tomb Reunion - teyla
I tried so hard to watch The Lost Tomb Reunion, because it starred Zhu Yilong, who played Shen Wei in Guardian, and because it was supposed to be a lot of fun and have lots of hurt/comfort. It's just not a show for people with a low tolerance for archaeological mayhem. But this vid swooped in to the rescue, as it is jampacked with hurt/comfort moments from throughout the series, so I got to see them without having to watch the show, yay w00t! I didn't watch the show far enough to be able to tell how well the vid purposed/repurposed various clips, but it flowed well visually and I can certainly say of Zhu Yilong, as Troy once said of Moffitt on Rat Patrol, "He suffers so nicely."

I haven't even heard of this fandom, so I hope someone can tell me about it! The vid was lovely.
True North*/Live Like a Warrior - The Untamed - Franzeska
Yay, another Untamed vid! This one focuses on Wen Ning. I really like how the vidder mixes up clips from different time periods in a way that works really well with song's theme of putting yesterday in the past and moving forward. I also like the incorporation of clips from the Living Dead sequel movie, and particularly Wen Ning's heroic moments from both the original series and the sequel movie that she highlights each time we hear "Live like a warrior" - this vid totally foregrounds BAMF!Wen Ning. So damn fine.
Hey Na Na*/same - Starsky and Hutch (TV) - Garrideb
Cute bouncy fun song, cute bouncy fun vid! Really nice slashy vibe and the usual total lack of personal space between the fellas.
Home/It Feels Like Home - Guardian (TV 2018) - Trickytricky
This is a slow and sweet vid about the relationship between Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan. I especially like the parallel moments near the end, where they tuck each other in with blankets or each other's jackets. ♥
Tiny Pretty and Angry/Agust D - by Agust D - The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty - Franzeska
Eeee! I loved this vid SO MUCH! I've watched it a bunch of times, and I'd've watched it several more times by now, but I'm only partway through the series and I can tell there are things in the vid I haven't seen yet. But I love it. Basically, this vid is three condensed minutes of Wang Zhi at his finest, featuring scheming, violence, and sass, to a cheerfully arrogant Korean rap song. ♥

Again, I don't know the fandom so I can't say much about the vid. Extremely interesting song choice; I hadn't heard it before.

I didn't enjoy the movie, so I haven't watched the series. This looked like a powerful vid, though.

Renegading/Levitating- Vagrant Queen - thingswithwings
The song was marked "same" in the listing (rather than "Levitating") and I was glad to learn during a discussion later that I wasn't the only person who didn't notice that it was the same song as the Mandalorian vid that opened the second set! Someone (not me) during the discussion observed that, in discussing songvids, we talk a lot about how setting the same clips to different music can give them a whole different feeling; in this case, setting *different* clips to the *same* music gave a different feeling, too! I've never seen Vagrant Queen, but this vid suggested a flirty & adorable relationship between two characters (and then confirmed it, girlkissing FTW!) and made me want to see the show.
