So I wrote a part two. *is happy* It still took forever or felt like it to write this but I keep reminding myself how long it's been since I seriously sat down to write anything. Sooo afraid to jinx the lively muses. *shifty eyes*. Anyway....

Title: Moments of Valor
Part: Two
Series: Saiyuki
Pairing: Sanzo & Goku
Warnings: No warnings, really. Adult topics, maybe.
Rating: PG

Summary: Sanzo reminisces while Goku watches over him.

Normally, the sound of water falling against the structure of a building he occupied brought back painful memories to Genjo Sanzo, but this night the rain left him with a buzzing white noise in the back of his head he usually felt only after the consumption of alcohol. He blamed the damn monkey for robbing him of his precious brooding and craptastic mood the rain typically gave him. He held onto his irritation with Goku and kept it close to his thoughts like a balm to soothe the deeper regrets he did not want to remember but could never forget.

Sanzo raked his fingers through his golden-blond hair and pushed it out of his eyes with another tiny sigh of annoyance with the world at large. He flicked ashes off the tip of his cigarette, lifted the filter to his lips, and inhaled deeply. A rustling from the other bed alerted him to the fact Goku was still alive, not that he particularly cared right at the moment. Sanzo stopped staring out the window with a sense of morbid fascination and let his eyes fall partially shut.

Once, Goku asked him why he enjoyed smoking so much when it stank and couldn't be good for him. Why he'd bothered answering Goku still bugged him but some things weren't worth the trouble of explaining or exploring too deeply. Memories of sunlight and naïve laughter filled his inner sight as he tensed with anticipation for what would come next. Sanzo reasoned it would surely be another trip into his own private hell - the day he had failed to protect his master, Koumyou Sanzo. What he remembered instead surprised him a little and seemed strangely fitting as well though he would die before admitting such a thing aloud.

Sunshine filtered through the trees surrounding the temple. He leaned against the largest tree he could find and enjoyed a smoke away from the moronic priests who always annoyed him with their lectures or looks. The sound of his name in a familiar, high-pitched voice made Sanzo cringe and almost commit the crime of destroying his cigarette. Such an infraction was as unforgivable as spilling a beer.

"Sanzo! Sanzo! Sanzo! There you are," Goku called and waved as he rushed up to stand in front of the priest.

"Go away," Sanzo growled.

Goku laughed, rubbed the back of his head, and glanced up at the light shining down between the dark green leaves of the tree. "Why are you hiding out here?" he asked before he wrinkled his nose. "Oh. Why do you always come out here to smoke those?"

"None of your business," Sanzo snapped and gave Goku a pointed glare, which of course the monkey completely ignored.

"I bet it's because those priests give you funny looks," Goku said and looked at the blond curiously. "Why do you smoke anyway? Cigarettes reek, make you stink, and have to be bad for you. Why do it?" he asked.

"Go away," Sanzo repeated.

"Not until you answer me," Goku persisted in a singsong voice.

Sanzo rolled his eyes and blinked slowly. A yell for Goku to leave him the fuck alone was on the tip of his tongue but something in the innocently curious gaze of the other male stopped him. He reasoned that if he didn't answer he wouldn't have any peace for the next day and he tried glaring darkly at Goku again to chase him off. It did not deter the stubborn monkey in the least. "I smoke because I want to," Sanzo finally answered.

Goku laughed softly and backed away slowly with his hands held up in a gesture of placation. "Okay, okay. I'm off to get something to eat! I'll save you a meat bun. Maybe," he said with a bright smile before dashing off in the direction of the temple kitchens.

"Idiot." The sunlight seemed a bit brighter after that, though Sanzo didn't understand why unless it was merely due to the wind gently pushing the clouds away from the sun.

Sanzo stirred and opened his eyes. Motion within his personal space had disturbed him enough to pull him out of the light trance the trip down memory lane caused. With a suspicious gaze, he blinked at the lightweight sheet tucked across his body where he leaned against the wall beside his chosen bed for the night. The blond studied Goku as he pulled away and lifted a brow in question.

"You called me in your sleep," Goku said matter-of-factly.

Sanzo snorted faintly and noticed the cigarette had dropped into the ashtray when his fingers relaxed enough to release it. "Idiot," he growled.

"That's what you said," Goku said with a strange little smile Sanzo didn't like in the least.

Sanzo chose not to even dignify that with a response and pulled the sheet up to his chin before he settled onto his side. The priest stared at the wall and ignored the sense of eyes on him. The sounds of shuffling feet, a mattress creaking, and a body flopping down finally allowed him to relax slightly. All's well that ended well and the rain would only last for so long before the journey west resumed. Sanzo could only rely on himself but at least he knew that his annoying companions would continue traveling with him just to get on his last nerve.

Some things in life never changed.
