An actual white Christmas? Gasp!

Winter has finally caught up with the capital region, and it looks like it might even stick. Last weekend there was a dramatic drop in temperature, as the mercury took a swan dive from 0 C (32 F) to -20 C (-4 F). Believe in global warming or not, the winters we've had these last few years have been record-breakingly mild, and us poor southerners have been cursing the cold and dealing with the struggling public transportation for over a week now.

This is not the coldest I've experienced (that was about -40 C - interestingly enough, also -40 F - in Oulu at the turn of the millennium) and Lapland regularly enjoys -30 C (-22 F) degrees but this is still quite the experience in wearing layers. Getting dressed takes forever, and I won't even go into what fun it is to first sweat in the train under all that clothing and then go outside in the freezing cold. I'm constantly irritated by hard it is to move and how I'm either wearing too much or not enough.

N seems to suffer from no such issues; he's been cycling to work every day, through icy sleet or twenty cm of snow. Now that's dedication.

weather, rl
