To be, or not to be

So in the midst of finals I have not been faithful to updating my journal. Here are some of the highlights:

Thursday I went with my Tolkien class to visit the grave of J.R.R. Tolkien and his wife. Their grave is beautiful and their headstone actually sayes "Beren and Luthien" on it. For those Tolkien fans out there, you will know how sweet this is.

Friday we had our common exam that everyone has to take. It wasn't too bad though, I didn't let it get to me. We also had our last day of classes, which makes me kind of sad.

Yesterday, Ashley, Amy, Courtney, and I went to Stratford-upon-Avon, where the birth place and grave of Shakespeare are located. We had so much fun. First, we went to the Teddy Bear Museum where they have the original Paddington Bear that was used on the show and the orginal Fozzie Bear muppet donated by Jim Henson. From there, we went to Shakespeare's birth place. Unfortunately, we showed up about the same time as four large tour groups and it took a while for us to get in. When we did get in, we were fighting off lots of rude line cutters and people shoving all around. Despite all that though, it was really neat. His house was really cute and the garden outside was gorgeous.

From there, we bought some delicious pasties and made our way to Trinity Cathedral where he is buried. The church was beautiful (as are most churches in England). They had some decorative plants all around the cathedral called the Proms which were also pretty cool. From there, we wandered along the Avon river until we came to a McDonalds. I was amazed when I went in there because you actually have options like grilled chicken nuggets and carrot sticks. We got Caramel Crazy McFlurries (don't worry McFlurries here are only half the size of the ones at home) that are made with caramel and Cadbury chocolate. It was like a chocolate Easter egg mixed in with ice cream. It was incredible. Apparently they also have a Cadbury Cream Egg McFlurry that I am determined to try before I leave.

Then, we wandered over to a huge Shakespeare memorial. We cracked up when all these little Asian girls surrounded the statue of Hamlet and were in awe. They kept putting their hands all over him and touching the skull he was holding. An English couple was with them and told them that Hamlet was pondering the meaning of life and all 4 or 5 of them replied with a collective "ahhh." It was hilarious.

From there, we went shopping at H&M and I bought a belt and some earrings. Back to the trainstation and to Oxford from there. Last night I finished my Children's Fantasy final paper, yay! Now I'm starting to really worry about how I'm going to get all the things that I bought home...

The Eagle and Child - the pub where Tolkien and C.S. Lewis met and discussed their writing. They also serve very good beer here =)

Me at outside of the Teddy Bear Museum. This place was a lot of fun!

Shakespeare's Birth Place at Stratford-upon-Avon. I learned that through the years, the house has changed on the outside to reflect the time period, but the inside remains the same.

Me and Hamlet - the one the little Asian girls were obsessed with.
