The Waddeson Manor

Jul 13, 2005 17:00

So today we didn't have class, and instead we ventured out to the Waddeson Manor, one of the many houses owned by this rediculously wealthy European family called the Rothschilds. We had a lecture about the manor and its owners yesterday, but it didn't prepare me for what I saw. The manor is huge, and it took us almost an hour to walk through. Everything is overly elaborate, there are paintings on every wall, and collections of all kinds of things. It has a wine cellar, an avairy where they still keep and breed rare birds, and a rose garden. Although it really was spectacular, I don't think we needed to stay the full 4 hours we were there. The bus rides were nice though, as were our packed lunches. Do you know they actually have roasted chicken potato chips here? And they taste exactly like roasted chicken. It blew my mind. Kind of like biting into a popcorn flavored jelly belly for the first time. And of course, there were the spectacular kit kat bars.

I also bought a mini bottle of Merlot. The Rothschilds are known for having some of the best wine in the world, and for only £1.75, I couldn't resist. I hope it makes it home...

And without further ado, I bring you the

The Waddeson Manor from the Front, you can't tell here, but there is a lot more to it over on the left.

Me and a big, beautiful fountain the the gardens.

Me and a statue of a gorilla holding a salmon. I thought it was very random and extremely entertaining.

This is about half of the aviary.. I couldn't fit the whole thing in the picture. The gold you see on the building is real gold, not just gold paint. They even have rare birds named after the family. We took a short tour there and learned about all the rare birds.
