Interesting upcoming films:
-Flicka! I don't know about you guys, but My Friend Flicka and its two sequels Thunderhead and Green Grass of Wyoming, by Mary O'Hara, were some of my absolute favorites growing up. And now that I am grown(okay, half-grown, being a child at heart) they're the kind of books that I want to own and re-read. They're positvely lovely, wise and fascinating and capturing perfectly the sometimes awkward and sometimes graceful movement of a child toward adulthood. Anyway, so I was happy when I heard they were making a movie, but figured it would just be the stereotypical cute-young-child falls in love-with horse and trains-and raises it against all odds. And then I watched the preview. The three things that lifted it from mild interest to 'I want to watch this NOW!' : 1. Tim McGraw. Okay, so I'm not one of those fanatics who think he's the most gorgeous country superstar out there(in case any of you are sadly and inexplicably ignorant, he's one of the single most famous and popular male country music stars in the country-which makes him VERY popular) but I do think that he's fairly good-looking and abosolutely charming, and as a double bonus they've got his songs in the movie-not the strained-cram in it because he's a superstar-kind but good songs, ones that actually fit perfectly with what's going on. Oh, yeah, I was getting to 2, wasn't I. Right-2. Alison Lohman-she's young, gorgeous, and obviously charismatic. Since the weight of the film will be riding on her, it all really depended on whether she was a good actress or not-and it really looks like she is.
Also, double bonus, they didn't make her 12,blond, and sugary sweet, but a rebellious and fiery brunette of a young woman(yess! go brunettes! Can you tell that I have dark hair? We brunettes are much understimated, I can tell you that. Contrary to popular opinion, I am here to tell you that blondes do NOT rule the world. Although they're not dumb either. I refuse to exhcange one set of stereotypes for another, that's like exchanging a smirk for a leer) I'm soliloquizing aren't I. *sigh* Back to the main topic. Oh yes-3. It's very simple. A certain gorgeous, bull-headed, and very blond young cowboy, whom I am HOPING is not her brother(begbegbegplease please please)Normally I prefer the dark-haired and dark-eyed type but, hey, I'm not THAT picky. And besides, we girls need our eye candy too. The guys have got Alison Lohman-oh yes and did I forget to mention that Mario Bello is also in this film as Tim McGraw's wife? another point-good actress-but we girls need something.
. Anyway, watch the preview here and

-A Good Year, starring Russel Crowe and Albert Finney and directed by Ridley Scott, who's directed pretty much everything under the sun including Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down and In her Shoes. It's a comedy/romance/drama in which Russell Crowe plays some sort of hilariously ruthless and offhand investment expert a.k.a person who makes himself and his company/colleagues lots of money at the cost of everyone else. Startlingly, he doesn't play the traditional loner-obsessed-with business-hated by all-and sundry guy but someone really quite charming aside from his uh, bastardness, who has a working relationship with his colleagues and a quite gorgeous accent. Anyway, uncle in Italy dies, had not updated his will in 20 years, Russell gets all  including house with lots of childhood memories which he's left behind as well as a gorgeous neighbour who wants the land for herself.

Not traditional and looks like a lot of fun. Russell Crowe is always good and usually has impeccable taste in movies. Watch the preview here
-Step Up. Coming out on August 18.  So I'm a sucker for dance movies, particularly teen/young people dance movies. This one looks a lot better than most, try to ignore the title. Done by an actual and acclaimed choreographer, good chemistry, a dancing-in-the-sunset-scene, great music-what's not to like?Plus it's got the luverly Channing Tatum(if it sometimes seems that I like every young male actor out there, let me remind you that I despise Orlando Bloom) Watch the trailer here or trailers and clips here Dance movies are always exhilerating and fun, if sometimes lacking in plot.
-The Night Listener, which mainly looks interesting because of Sandra Oh from Grey's Anatomy, as I do not like Robin Williams and don't particularly like Toni Collette either. Coming out on August 9.
-Trust the Man-August 25, Julianne Moore, David Duchovny,etc.-more about that in one of my other posts about upcoming films here
-All the King's Men, based on a classic book by Robert Penn Warren and starring Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins. " An idealistic southern politician, who appeals to the common man whilst effectively playing dirty politics, slowly becomes corrupted by the system." Much drama-watch the trailer here I am very much looking forward to it-several of the actors that I admire the most, an overall all-star cast, and based on a book. September 22.

-The Ilusionist, a fantasy/thriller/drama set in 17th(?) C Vienna, based on a book and starring Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti and Rufus Sewell. About a stage magician whose growing fame attracts the attention of the Crown Prince Leopold(Rufus) who orders a performance. Unfortunately for the Prince, his fiance and the magician knew each other as children and recognize each other on stage, at which point they fall in love all over again and begin a passionate affair. Watch the trailer and exclusive clips here. Coming out on August 18th.
-The Fountain, starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz and hopefully coming out this November. No trailers yet but read synopsis and see photos by clicking on it.
In other news, the crime drama-with-a-twist Saints sounds interesting, as does Thieves, another crime drama based on a Hammett-award winning book and directed by the man who directed Unfaithful and Indecent Proposal(on second thought-THAT'S a recommendation? I don't think so) Much more exciting, Heath Ledger is going to be the Joker in The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan's sequel to Batman Begins (will it still star Christian Bale? Because if so...ugh. I find him creepy and distasteful) and Nicole Kidman will be in the fantasy epic The Golden Compass(Yay! I was hoping for that) and Helena Bonham Carter will be a witch in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The release dates for all the big films-Harry Potter, Narnia, The Dark Night, and PotC 3 have all apparently been pushed back-don't expect to see any of them before 2007 or 2008. Harry Potter will be coming out in the U.S in July 2007 and the other two big fantasies, The Golden Compass and Prince Caspian, are both coming out in 2008, the latter in the summer.(that is a LONG time to wait. I love Narnia)You can read more at Greg's preview page here.
That's all, folks!

upcoming films, flicka, a good year
