Oh my. Good gosh. There is little more to be said about this chapter but Snape Snape Snape!!!! Is his apartment so perfect or what??? Books and elf-made wine and cobwebs and old furniture!! *dies* This house will figure prominently in all Snapefic from now on, I have NO doubt. Have you ever seen anyone so stubbornly on the fence when it comes to double-agentry? That man is just--he could be anything. He could be double-crossing both parties and pocketing wild amounts of cash from the goblins. It just takes my breath away.
Other important news includes: Draco. Clearly he's got a job to do but does it include *actually* getting the Dark Mark? Because that will be awkward in the locker room. Initial guess is that he's supposed to kill Harry, but I know how Jo likes to screw with us so I'm not jumping to any conclusions.
Finally: The Unbreakable Vow. Man, if I was a wizard, I try my hardest to make this spell not exist. Lobbying to make it a fourth Unforgivable, and everything. There is nothing good about being able to force people to keep promises they make. It can only go badly. I do wonder how the Bonder figures in, what role they play, and whether their elimination can change the vow. I also think that Snape could get out of it by...well, that might be a spoiler. We'll see by the end.
Quick Fangirling
Bella is crazy, and Cissy! I love that you have a nickname that we already use!
Wormtail, you are pathetic! You weenie! Don't you know how much Snape is loving beating down an old school enemy, you are taking the brunt of his hatred for four men! You have a freaking metal hand, refuse him once or twice! Wuss!
The House of Snape seems to have no house-elf. Why?
The "elf-made" wine begs the question of whether there's more than one kind of elf. Do house-elves run wineries, or set up individual batches? Or do they have freer kin?
Nice job answering five years of questions about Snape's motivations, Jo. Too bad we can't believe any of them.
My brother wandered up about halfway, after I let out a gasp of glee at realizing who owned Spinner's End. I read him the description of the house, at which point he wanted to know about Snape's parents. I had to confess that we know nothing (leaving out the flashback from Book 5) so neither of us know whether the parents are dead or not.
