I got my copy at 3:45 this afternoon. I went squee quite a lot and my brother, who was napping in the back bedroom, woke up with a bleary, "What's that noise?" I went back and showed off the new book. He looked it over carefully and flipped through, at which point I ran ducking from the room because, spoilers suck! But he didn't read anything out loud, and handed it back whole. Later he said I shouldn't make noises like a mouse. But I got to sit on the stinkin' hot balcony and read two chapters, so here is the first.
I understand how this chapter was under construction since the beginning of the series; it's foreshadowed in Book 3 so there's no surprise that Fudge contacted the Prime Minister. All in all most of this was your basic catch-up expository lump, but creatively framed so I can forgive her. The poor PM!
I was astonished to see a new Minister already; I had expected the book to encompass a political race (Minister Fudge was elected, apparently, per Book 1). Scrimgeour was mentioned in Book 5 as a castaway name of a Ministry worker, and he's got some kind of relative, Brutus, who wrote The Beater's Bible. Of course we had his description months ago, but he doesn't act quite like I expected, based on looks; I think I was aiming for someone more kindly. I do. Not. Trust. Him.
The one major, hysterical upset to my way of thinking was this: they breed. Wow. Wow. Wow. This just has *such* ramifications for past, present and future wizarding society. I knew they weren't classified as "beasts" per FBaWtFT, but I think I thought they were "spirits" not "beings"--but procreation definitely puts them into the "being" category. Now--how do they do it? Wait--I don't mean do it, shut up you perverts, I mean--how is it accomplished? *head hurts* I do suppose this could pave the way for whole new bizarre areas of Potter porn. I for one will never read a Dudley/dementor slashfic. Probably.
Quick Fangirling
Emmeline Vance and Amelia Bones! That's darn fast to be racking up the body count!
Kingsley Shacklebolt always was and continues to be the awesome.
A giant! Already! She is just cutting straight to the chase.
I assume this means Percy's also been sacked, which basically I totally saw coming. No confirmation though; who knows? Maybe Scrimgeour is in the market for an intelligent, effective sycophant. I know I could use one.
The bridge/blackmail connection was really interesting, the Dark Lord is working right out in public.
I'm not very interested in Herbert Chorley. Think he'll be back?
