Yet another article they wouldn't let me publish

And this time they didn't give me any explanation. They just let it sit for months after I fixed it up. I wonder if perhaps I have somehow damaged my relations with the people who run the website after trying to review independently published works. It can be hard to convey through text that I mean it when I write that I understand where they are coming from with such policies. In any case, If I can find another website that will allow me to write review articles for profit, I will probably try switching to them.

Tenacious D by Tenacious D

Tenacious D is the band that launched Jack Black’s career. Known primarily as a comic actor, Black also had a talent for music, and discovered in actor’s club rival Kyle Gass similar talents. After settling their differences, Kyle taught Jack how to play the guitar in exchange for acting tips. As the two got better as a duo, they decided to form a band, originally playing normal covers of songs from other bands on the club circuit in a group that didn’t have a name. Eventually settling on the name of a football maneuver, the duo began performing original songs infused by Jack Black’s sense of vulgar humor which mocked the hard rocking lifestyle. At one of their shows, David Cross happened to be in attendance; and he was so impressed with the band that he worked out a deal with them for a television show on HBO formed around their music. Even though around only 10 episodes were made, the show lead to a record deal and opened many doors for both Jack and Kyle.

Tenacious D is one of those bands that is either love it or hate it. You will either “get” the humor in their songs or you won’t. But no matter what, once the music starts playing, the consistent emotion is one of surprise. This is because the duo can actually rock, a skill noticeably absent from other humorists of their ilk.
Originally an acoustic duo, the music maintains some of the old flavor even though they got a band to back them for their album release. Because of this, the sound is a unique mash up of singer-songwriter pop rock and classic rock. Those more familiar with Jack’s film appearances might already have some idea of what direction Tenacious D takes, as much of the humor of the songs is based on Jack’s trademark “self-aggrandizing deluded rocker” character, with Kyle Gass playing the straight man to Black’s musical antics. The songs on the album are interspersed with amusing comedy skits that better showcase the band’s character, although the real draw is the musical numbers. The lyrics can be forgiven for being so vulgar by how creatively the songs are built up around them, though even the childish vulgarity of some of the songs can be amusing when you realize that you essentially have two middle-aged men trying to perform rock as if they were younger than they actually are. The whole presentation of Tenacious D is one that mocks the rock lifestyle, with songs that satirize interpersonal relationships within bands, the sexual prowess of rock stars, the creative process, and life on the road.

In short, here we have an act in the genre of musical comedy that stands tall above its brethren. Tenacious D bears the full force of creativity, talent, and the ability to actually write good music, traits crucial in any musical genre, but which many bands performing musical comedy lacked at the time Tenacious D made their splash on the scene.
