Okay, so I know Yanagi_wa, at the very least, knows her way around guns, and I'm hoping a few of the rest of you do, too. Surprisingly enough, I have spent a great deal of time around the weapons, but know very little about them. For several reasons, to tell the honest truth, but mostly because I think they smell (I hate gunpowder of all kinds,

1. There is always kick-back, and the more powerful guns can not only throw of your aim, rifles can injure you just by not holding them correctly. You *have* to pull rifles into your shoulder tightly, or it can bruise it. If you hold it correctly, you can minimize soreness, and keep your aim fairly consistent. But if you hold yourself to rigidly your arms get tired pretty quickly. XD
2. You don't have to manually adjust the sight on the rifle (clicking it up/down side-side). If you watch your grouping - the direction the bullets consistently go, re-aim accordingly. So, if you always seem to hit up and left, aim down and right. It's a nice quick fix. Similarly, kick back can throw off your shot, and a person usally has a direction they tend to go in, so you can adjust for the problems it causes this way. Or you can adjust for wind this way, because while wind is horrible for air-rifles/pellet guns, it can also throw off .22 calibre.
3. Make sure you shoot with your dominant eye. It *usually* matches your dominant hand. But, if doesn't, you have to learn how to shoot with the other hand/side, because it's awkward to lean your head in the wrong direction, not to mention possible dangerous. I've also noticed that people whose dominant hand and eye don't match have ambidextrous tendencies...interesting. ^_^
4. Take a few deep breaths, and shoot as you're releasing your breath (or you can hold it, like I do, but not too long - your eyes start to blur XD), because the muzzle moves up and down and sways as you breathe.
5. For shooting from a standing position, keep your feet shoulder width apart. Pistols you hold straight in front of you. Rifles require you to cock your hip to the side to balance your weight properly (the position takes some getting used to), and your arms get sore a lot faster.
Those are all the big things. As far as types of gun/rifle, I think someone already made a rec for a handgun. An air powered rifle (like a Daisy) is actually pretty good for starters, especially because it's light weight, and has virtually no kick. It is a 'rifle-sized pellet gun' though. If you wanted a real rifle, I'd say look up the Anschutz )I think that's how you spell it). Professional biathlon athlete's use them. They're a .22 calibre rifle that come in different sizes and weights, including one that's about as big, and as light, as a Daisy air rifle.
Hope that helps. Feel free to ask other things. ^_^ I'm very much looking forward to seeing the next chapter of your story.
