Help?

Okay, so I know Yanagi_wa, at the very least, knows her way around guns, and I'm hoping a few of the rest of you do, too.  Surprisingly enough, I have spent a great deal of time around the weapons, but know very little about them.  For several reasons, to tell the honest truth, but mostly because I think they smell (I hate gunpowder of all kinds, including firecrackers) and they're loud (even when I'm wearing protective gear, they hurt my ears).  So I never had much to do with them.

What I need is some basic information.  Like, how do I describe Harry stripping and cleaning a gun?  How would I describe him being taught how to hold and shoot a gun?  (The only gun I shot was a 12 gauge and the kick didn't bother me like it was supposed to?  Apparently I was supposed to be pretty sore the next day, is that true?)  Are there any sort of tricks Harry would have been likely to learn from the pilots?  And what type of gun is he likely to have?  I know my mother has a glock, the kids on my family's farm start out with some small caliber shot-gun -type thing (I can't remember the name, and it's not a BB or air gun) and move to the 12 gauge, but what would Harry have?

I'd look for this stuff on the internet, but I can't find anything for comparison.  This gun does this, this gun does that. . . blah, blah blah.  Which really doesn't answer my questions, you know?  So I thought I'd make a post and ask for help.  ^_^

I do know a fair bit about gun safety when not shooting/handling the weapon a great deal, so let me list the few things I know so you can add to that if necessary.

1.  Make sure the safety is on.
2.  Safety or not, don't touch the damn trigger unless you plan to shoot the weapon.
3.  Don't point it at anything you don't want to shoot (safety on or off, or finger on trigger or not).
4.  Don't look down the barrel to check for a bullet (seriously. . . who does stuff like that?)
5.  If you don't know what you're doing, don't handle the weapon without proper supervision (I live be a few of these rules).
6.  Treat every gun like it's loaded, whether or not it really is.
7.  If you point it at someone, then you better be prepared to shoot them.

I think those are my rules, but, like I said, I don't handle the weapon much.  I generally prefer a bow, and some of the concepts are similar (though it's just a smidge more obvious when the bow is loaded, so that rule doesn't get much use ^_~) but I know I'm missing a lot of ideas that I probably need to be teaching Harry.  Not to mention I want to go over them because I also post on ff.net and that has a wide audience, some of which might have never seen a gun in their lives.  I don't want to mislead them about the weapons because they are dangerous and some people just don't exercise common sense.

So, any help you could give me on the subject would be a great help, since I know very, very little about guns (as you can tell since I was asking all those questions) and the idea of gun safety while the gun is in use (I've shot once, missed all the clay pigeons, lol, and really didn't much care for it, so I've never done it again.  My ears were ringing for days.)  In any case, help a girl out, please!
