The smell of apple cider permeated the cool, crisp air. Harley snuggled down into his scarf as he reached over and twined his fingers with Ian's as they tromped along the outer corridor beside the store on their way to the staging area for the wagon rides out to the pumpkin patch. Looking up, Harley took a moment to admire his partner. Long and lean in a pair of jeans and a red sweater, Ian stood so tall compared to him. His hair was as black as a Raven's wing and brushed his shoulders as it hung just over his dark brown eyes. Dark eyes that were staring back at him.
“Excited about getting a pumpkin?” Ian asked in an amused sounding tone.
“You know it.” Harley smiled and tugged him faster toward an old looking wagon being pulled by two large work horses sitting idly in the grass.
Getting in line and clambering aboard, they took two seats on the end and watched as a worker pulled the steps away and chained the railing closed. Since it was still fairly early in the day they were the only one's in the wagon besides an elderly couple and a man and woman with a little girl who were all sitting near the front.
Moving around trying to get comfortable, Harley settled back into the arm Ian had stretched back against a running board and held on as the horses began pulling the wagon as they bumped along the rutted dirt road.
“You're really enjoying this, aren't you?” Ian inquires.
“Yes.” Harley tries to explain his enthusiasm. “This time of year is so beautiful with the turning leaves and the coming holiday's. Thank you for coming with me. I know this wasn't what you were expecting for a date.”
“I think I would be willing to do almost anything if you asked it of me.” Ian simply stated.
Harley went to laugh thinking that Ian was being silly until he see's the look in his eyes and freezes. “But, we have only known each other a few weeks...”
The wagon lurching to a stop interrupted their conversation and Ian gave a small laugh as Harley let out a puff of irritation. “Don't worry. I plan on finishing this conversation once you have found yourself your pumpkin.” Ian assured him.
With that thought, Harley jumped up and started bouncing from foot to foot as he waited for the attendant to open the chained gate and let him out. Racing down the rickety steps he made a beeline for the patch of pumpkins directly to his left and started to exam each one with careful precision.
Ten minutes later he's back on the wagon, his and Ian's pumpkins settled at their feet. Biting his lip, Harley is unsure of how to restart the conversation that they had been having prior to stopping. Feeling gentle tugging on his hair, he turns and looks at Ian who is gazing at him with look on his face that Harley is almost sure he understands at this point by the thundering of his heart.
“I think I knew I loved you from the first moment I saw you.” Ian whispers in his ear.
