The Summer's slowly slipping away and what can I say, it was most definitely a Take That Summer for me. Still, it doesn't mean I completely lost touch with kpop. So here I thought I'd present to you my Korean songs of this Summer.
June
2PM - Hands Up
What's it about? Living the high life - drinking, partying and, most certainly, putting your hands up.
Similar songs? Inevitably GD&T.O.P's High High.
Story of the MV: guys abandon their private planes, yachts and places by the pool and go partying in style. Watch out for Taec's yellow lambo. Interestingly enough, everyone's drinking from a plastic cup. There's liquor being poured, babes, artificial horses and at one point Taec (who's dressed exactly like That That during Love Love and Never Forget on their latest tour!) stands on top of Chansung.
Fav lyric: [Taec] „ You know what I'm sayin' ” At this point I'm always half expecting U-Know to pop up from somewhere.
Useful tip: just remember the words "put your hands up" and you know half of song already.
T-ara - Roly Poly
What's it about? Liking a guy and wanting to do the Roly Poly with him.
Story of the MV: 12:32, it's a short movie! Middle-aged lady finds an old photo and starts reminiscing about her youth. We travel back in time and see her with her wild friends on some sort of field trip, sneaking out and going to a club. There, there are the unthinkable: boys, music, DJ oppa and coca cola. Soon the girls own the dance floor and everybody's doing some version of the hustle.
My opinion about the song? It is really simple and repetitive, but it gets stuck in your head like mad.
Random lyric: „ Did I go into your heart? I like you! ”
Ah, disco. " Those were the days when you had to know how to dance to get into a club. " I feel you, anon.
July
miss A - Goodbye Baby
What's it about? A girl discovering the ultimate truth of the universe - that guys are in fact asses.
Similar songs? Irony by Wonder Girls.
Story of the MV: in some entertainment agency there were 4 pretty girls with pretty legs and a pompous big-shot guy who was treating them like crap and cheating on them all (all 4 at the same time). The girls came to their senses and blew him up, I think.
Fav lyric: [Jia] „ My name isn't Suzy, you kept calling me Suzy by mistake. I should have realized then. ” Yeah, it was a pretty big give away.
Bonus:
2AM's rendition of Goodbye Baby. Usually I'm not much into boys performing as girls, cause the performances are often too try-hard for my taste, but this one actually looks fun. The guys are having a bit of a laugh there and I'm loving Jinwoon as Suzy.
2NE1 - Hate You
What's it about? That guys suck and because of their utter and complete, well, sucking, loving them is a waste of time. We're better off. That's what I call great lyrics.
Story of the MV: Powerpuff-styled 2NE1 are monter fighters. They're tracking a boy, who coincidently looks like a cartoon version of GD. CL is the one with big guns, Minzy's the driver, Dara's got hots for the bad guy and she's good with swords and Bom's clumsy.
Key lyric: „ You really suck. I have no reason to see you. You s-s-suck. ”
„ I hate you. I'm fine living without you. ”
Best youtube comment: " I actually thought they were saying 'oh hey Jude' as some kind of Beatles reference. " Lol.
2NE1 - Ugly
What's it about? Low self-esteem and obsession with being ugly. Yeah, some days I could really sing along, but every girl has times like that, right?
What does it also sound like? A manifesto to take a stand against Korean worship of superficial and often artificial beauty.
Story of the MV: 2NE1 girls are making a riot, London style. We're talking window breaking, stuff throwing, paint spraying (on objects, as well as people) with a little bit of singing thrown in. Thumbs up for Plastic zone.
Key lyric: „ I think I'm ugly, and nobody wants to love me. Just like her I wanna be pretty, I wanna be pretty. Don't lie to my face tellin' me I'm pretty. ” Oh look, it rhymes.
August
Nine Muses - Figaro
What's it about? Apparently, encouraging the guy to give up (tonigh), because he's doing it all wrong. What's it not about? Inviting him to come over at midnight. Oh well, it was a long shot. But make it "keep up up tonight" instead of "give up up" and you're listening to a whole new song.
Story of the MV: seven girls going round on a vinyl.
Reason to like this song? Sera. Well that, and it's not complete rubbish.
Key lyric: „ Gone by the midnight, by the midnight. If that's how it's going to be, please leave, leave and leave. ”
What about Kara's comeback while we're at it? Well, I don't like it. But I want Jiyoung's hair.
