*still unsure what to think*

I'm going to dust off my alter-ego, Lord of the Rings fandom identity and see if this has stirred up the dust in the Movies Forum of www.theonering.com (formerly www.tolkienonline.com). ^_^

And off to IMDB to refresh memory of Raimi-directed films.

Spider-Man 2 is one of my favorite movies, so I'm definitely biased in Raimi's favor. I think Raimi has a good combination of skill in directing both action and effects as well as actors.

Still would rather have PJ of course.

That's true, the Spider Man movies have been good. Sam Raimi can also do horror (similar background to PJ) so I could also see him bringing the darker aspects of the Hobbit out.

I wonder if they would get Andy Serkis and Weta to do Gollum again? I don't think I could imagine anyone else.

I hope so! Gollum is so iconic already, it would be too weird if he didn't look and sound like "himself".
