Ian McKellen has weighed in how he feels at his website. I got the feeling from his comments that while he knows Peter is the best guy for the job, he would be willing to act under another's direction.
The "rumor from a reliable source" is that the new director might be Sam Raimi. And I'm actually glad to hear that. If you have to go with someone else, Raimi isn't a bad choice at all. I feel sort of relieved hearing his name thrown around as opposed to so many others.
Richard Taylor, head of Weta, has said that while PJ may not be involved, that doesn't automatically rule out Weta doing the effects, and that they would love to do The Hobbit.
MGM has said that "the matter of Peter Jackson directing 'The Hobbit' films is far from closed."
